Thursday, January 31 – This is the LA River: DVD Release Party – 8
PM
Without the Los Angeles River there would be no Los Angeles. A historical and
geographic reference point, the subject of poems, art, derision and protest,
the story of the LA River is a long and winding one, open to endless interpretation. This
Is The LA River invited 21 neighborhood youth between the ages of
14 and 19 to explore the River through the medium of 16mm film. The result
is a captivating collaborative documentary that examines the complex past,
present and future of the great waterway of Los Angeles.
Also screening: L.A. River Project (1992, 12 min.), part of
a multi-disciplinary art installation created by Susan Barron, Jose Esquivel,
Leonard Martinez, and Manuel Ortega, with teacher Susan Boyle and artist Cheri

“My art is a meditation illustrating spirit. As a painter, digital video
adds time and motion to my creative toolkit/toybox generating “animated
paintings” that are evolving into a new breed of dynamic visual expression.
Surfing the fractal edge between paint and pixel, my recent "Z-space" paintings
and video “AniMandalas” challenge perception and engage the eye"inside" the
illusory space of deep perspective and radiant color.” Program includes Sky
Tunnel, Sea Hear Now and Riding Time and runs during
EPFC store hours during the month of February. FREE!
Saturday, February 2 – Seniors Digital Drop-In – 11 AM – 1

EPFC invites neighborhood seniors ages 60+ to join us for our FREE Introduction
to Digital Filmmaking Drop-In Classes. Learn how to use digital cameras and
basic computer editing software to make your own movie in a relaxed and informal
setting. All materials and equipment are provided by EPFC. No previous filmmaking
experience necessary.
Saturday, February 2 – Benefit For EPFC @ Lulu’s Beehive – 8

Grassroots Acoustica is a terrific monthly singer-songwriter series that raises
funds for local non-profits and this month that local non-profit is EPFC! Foregoing
fees in favor of collection plates, creator & curator Mark Islam along
with artists-in-residents Tom & Byron and an ever-revolving troupe of overqualified
coffeehouse crooners gather on the first Saturday of every month with the intention
of making music matter. Grassroots Acoustica's seven shows to date have tithed
a total of $3,926 in contributions to Los Angeles-based non-profit organizations.
No cover charge. No suggested minimum donation. Join the fun at Lulu's Beehive

Tuesday, February 12 – Rumi – Turning Ecstatic – 7:30

Mevlana Jelalludin Rumi was a 13th C. Mystic and Poet. He was born in Balkh
Afghanistan and lived out his life in Konya Turkey. His two signature literary
works "The Mathnawi" and the "Divani Shams i Tabriz" are
considered second only in importance to the Koran in the Middle East. Canadian
filmmaker Tina Petrova shares her extraordinary encounter with Rumi as she
leads us on a road trip of discovery across America to the shifting sands of
the Middle East, seeking out scholars who animate his works in the world today. FILMMAKER

Thursday, February 14 – Best of ATA Film & Video Festival – 8

Artists’ Television Access (ATA), a San Francisco non-profit film and
video screening house and gallery, brings a selection of films from the ATA
Film & Video Festival to the Echo Park Film Center. This Valentine’s
Day, come see the love that these “original, independent & underground” filmmakers
bring to the medium. Ranging from the “luscious, epic lightshow” of
Paul Clipson’s Echo Park, to the haunting and intriguing journey of Martin
Hansen’s Paradise Drift, these films offer something for everyone. The
works include LA-via-SF student Nick Parker’s film on the founding of
MLK day, SF favorites Vanessa Woods and Tommy Becker and international films
including a piece by a famous Canadian! CURATORS ISABEL FONDEVILLA
DND SHAE GREEN IN ATTENDANCE!
Friday, February 15 – Political Film Night – 7 pm
The Union of Progressive Iranians present an evening of thought-provoking film
and discussion on international social justice issues. Tonight’s film
is Vietnam: American Holocaust. The United States killed between 3
and 5 million people in the Vietnam War. This feature looks at the history
of that war and the how and why it happened using interviews with participates
on both sides, speeches, conversation and actual wartime footage. Contains
graphic violence. Refreshments provided.
Sunday, February 17 – Super 8 Sunday – 12 – 4 PM
This one-day workshop includes basic camera operation, shooting techniques
and hand-processing. No previous filmmaking experience necessary. All equipment
and materials provided by EPFC. $60/$50 EPFC members. Class limited to 10
students; register early!

Thursday, February 21 & Friday, February 22 – New Indie:
Carbuncle – 8 PM
Carbuncle, "a mobile home drama with a disabling sense
of humor", concerns a director with Asperger's Syndrome making a movie
about a mentally challenged woman in a mobile home park who is manipulated
by her alcoholic social worker. The film was made on a micro-budget over
the course of 5 years and premiered at the Milan Film Festival. Carbuncle,
starring Shawn Lockie and Jim Eshom, is the first feature-length film from
T. Arthur Cottam, award-winning director of Pornographic Apathetic and Filthy
Food. CAST AND CREW IN ATTENDANCE BOTH EVENINGS.

Thursday, February 28 – Animation Nite: From Halifax with
Love – 8 PM
Vegan Delights from Halifax’s NorthEnd! Inspired
by her newly completed film, Siloën Daley brings a one-hour program of animated
and mixed-animated short films made by herself and six women who at one time
all lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Music by sweet local band, Foot Foot, to
