The class will be an interactive and collaborative endeavor where each student will have the opportunity to reflect on their relationship with media, culture, and identity through video exercises and discussion.

WORK
12 Sessions on Thursdays 4:30 – 6:30, beginning March 4
Instructors: Matt Weathers, Carla Orendorff, Monique Beltran and Daniel Garcia
WORK will be a magnified look at the mechanized parts that run societies around the world - workers! Why do we have to work? How has work changed over time? What's the role of the artist in a work based society? We'll be examining these questions and many more surrounding work, labor and society during the 12-week program. Through the class, students will become artisans themselves - learning the fundamentals of filmmaking (along with research, interview technique, storytelling, lighting, cinematography, sound recording, special effects and editing) that will guide each student in making their own short films examining their ideas and views on work societies of today. The class will culminate with a public screening, potluck reception and Q&A with the filmmakers as part of the 6th Annual EPFC Youth Film Festival on May 22, 2010. A DVD of class work will be available June 2010.
Open to local youth ages 12 – 19; no filmmaking experience necessary.

THE SOUND WE SEE: AN LA CITY SYMPHONY
12 Sessions on Thursdays 4:30 – 6:30, beginning September 16
“What is a City Symphony? City Symphonies are motion pictures that capture the spirit and uniqueness of a city by assembling images of everyday life in that city. The classic City Symphony genre was a silent, black and white, avant-garde documentary that first appeared in the 1920s. As in a symphony, they have movements that vary in pace and intensity. These movies bombard our sight with images of a city (images that often are quite surrealistic) in order to capture its heartbeat and expose its soul.” – Angelo J. Pompano
Over twelve weeks, we will explore the origins of the City Symphony and its contemporary relevance as students create their own 24-hour cinematic celebration of the dynamic metropolis that is Los Angeles.
Open to local youth ages 12 – 19; no filmmaking experience necessary.
All program equipment, materials and instruction provided free of charge by EPFC. Class size is limited so call or email to reserve your spot.
A one-hour mandatory orientation session for all interested students and their parents/guardians will be held at Echo Park Film Center, 7:30 pm on Tuesday, September 14.
