Saturday, January 23 – HANDMADE CINEMATIC SPECTACLE – 6 PM
In the small scale of puppet theater, elaborate special effects are within reach. Shipwrecks, thunderstorms, and the giant maw of a monster destroying the city can all be handcrafted with everyday objects. Using small cameras that can move easily through miniature environments, one can create close ups, aerial shots, sweeping panorama, and many other conventions of cinematic spectacle. Cutting and dissolving between multiple camera feeds during the performance creates a viewing experience that slips back and forth between a grand cinematic experience and intimate handmade theater. Join us for this special presentation of live cinema performance incorporating found objects, puppet, toys, miniature sets and live video mixing, the culmination of a 6-week youth workshop created and facilitated by Susan Simpson of The Manual Archives. FREE EVENT! www.manualarchives.org/

Thursday, January 28 – FILMS BY STEVEN EASTWOOD – 8:00 PM
Steven Eastwood's film & video practice spans artists' moving image, experimental fiction and documentary. He uses narrative as a material, appropriating cinema language and documentary tropes, piggybacking on conventions whilst deconstructing them. Conventions are misused and the appearances of the cinema's habits are dragged into unusual contexts. Story burns in the gate, subjects become caught-up in the interval of the edit, the very act of representation is made a ruin of. Eastwood's research has involved taking filmmaking to specific groups and localities and conducting cinematic drifts, through Dorset in the UK, Lithuania, Croatia and most recently Bosnia (Different Systems of Chaos 2003, The Film 2004, Come As You Are 2005, and the feature Buried Land 2009, respectively). These films are encounters with a real place, where the event of filmmaking becomes a site for performing difference. The outcome can be short or feature length, single screen or multi-screen installation, live performed or contextually situated. He recently completed his first feature length film. FILMMAKER IN ATTENDANCE!
